I am watching an organization in its death throes and it would bad enough if it weren’t so personal. But it’s pretty personal: My kids attend public school.
I’ve got a post up today at LA Moms Blog about just one of the nutso aspects of our district. But it’s really getting ugly. There’s a rumor on good authority that all campuses with fewer than 400 students will be closed by next Fall. And where will all those students go? Well, I guess they’ll all go to soon-to-be-overcrowded campuses. Ugly. 1400 teachers were to have lost their jobs in February and the class sizes would have increased all over, but the latest rumor is that we’ll stave that off until the Fall. Still Ugly.
My image of the district is of a giant old wooden chair that’s been eaten away by termites and all that’s left is the hulking shell of its former self. Still expected to hold up under the weight — and teach — 700,000 students — and not capable. And so one leg crumbles, then another will, and one day it’ll all be in a big heap.
