Pushmo For Nintendo 3DS Download

Pushmo is a new game for the Nintendo 3DS you can get from the Nintendo eShop for download. The object of the game is to solve 3D puzzle shapes and get the little hero Mallo to the top of the structure.

The game also allows users to create their own puzzles and share them with friends, which is a very cool feature.

Pushmo gameplay from Nintendo for Nintendo 3DS

It’s a nice small game, perfect for quiet time. There’s not a lot of action, no shooting or anything like that. It’d be a great game for anyone who likes spatial puzzles and enjoys figuring them out.

Pushmo is rated E, can be purchased through the eShop for the Nintendo 3DS, and retails for $6.99.

Beauty & The Beast in 3D Opens January 13, 2012

Beauty and The Beast 3D opens this Friday, January 13th, and if you’ve never seen the movie, it might just be time.

Beauty & the Beast 3D opens January 13, 2012

The age-old story of finding true love beneath a less-than-attractive exterior is told in animated – and now 3-dimensional – glory in this updated Disney film, originally released in 1991.

I was intrigued to see if 3D would make a real difference in this film and I have to say I don’t think it added anything. I took off my 3D glasses part way through, just to check, and there was virtually no difference to the naked eye.

Which is just fine, because the point of the story is not the 3D objects flying straight at your face out of the screen; the point of the story is to realize that the Beast is really a great guy under that gruff exterior, and that Belle really ought to just give him a chance.

Beauty & The Beast on their date night Beauty & the Beast 3D opens January 13, 2012

Which she does, at which point he calms down a bit and starts acting more gentlemanly around her – and of course, the rest is history.

There are really charming scenes in the film, most of which involve the enchanted servants of the castle, now living as furniture and household objects. Lumiére, the candlestick, is quite a rascal, at once charming and the tiniest bit naughty, and he takes the lead in trying to get Belle and the Beast to fall in love.

Mrs. Potts, the teapot, and her son Chip, the teacup, are the hospitality committee, and Mrs. Potts, voiced by Angela Lansbury, gets to sing the tile song as well. Be Our Guest is my favorite song from the show, however, and the Fantasia-esque animation sequence is very fun.

Beauty & the Beast 3D opens January 13, 2012I was glad to have been able to see the film with my kids, since they weren’t born when it came out originally. And it’s playing with a short: Tangled Ever After.

The Rise of The Old’n: Tony Bennet Can Sing & Betty White Is Freakin’ Funny

My 8-year-old son has come up with a new word to describe me and it isn’t Wonderful, Smart, Beautiful, All-Knowing, Regal, Radiant, Tough-As-Nails, or anything else I would actually think I might like to hear him say.

He calls me an Old’n.

I guess he heard some character on a cartoon referring to a young whipper-snapper as a young’n and he extrapolated to come up with a word for me and people of my ilk.

It’s not that I resent it per se, it’s more that I felt instantly he had it all wrong; I’m not OLD. Right?

Well, wrong. I am old. Compared to an 8-year-old, certainly. And I am coming to terms with that as I hover on the verge of turning 50 this year.

Seems like a pretty major milestone. Gotta be the halfway point of my life, at least, I would think. So it does give me pause – gulp – to think about claiming it. Although, of course, it does beat the alternative.

The point is that since I don’t feel old I didn’t want to be labeled as old, with all the implications the word holds for imminent nursing home residency, bed pans and death. And then came Tony Bennett.

I was invited to hear Tony Bennett sing last night as part of the PBS Press Tour of the Television Critics Association (TCA) annual Winter event in Pasadena, and he was on fire.

Tony Bennett singing at PBS Winter Press Tour at TCAThe man is 85 years old – Eighty-Five! And he was phenomenal!

I have not been a life-long fan of his; I never really got into the whole Ocean’s 11/Rat Pack kind of thing until George Clooney remade the movie, and I really had not paid much attention to the man until he did a Duet with Lady Gaga, whom he by the way said was his favorite partner for his new PBS Great Performances series called Tony Bennett: Duets II.

But I have become a newly-minted fan of Tony Bennett, not only because he likes to sing with Lady Gaga, or can belt out a great tune by himself, or works with his son as his manager, but because it turns out he is Really Old and that hasn’t stopped him from being a phenomenal – and working – performer.

Betty White's Off Their Rockers on NBCBetty White, who is now 90 years old, is also still working her tail off in movies and TV, and has become a hipster sensation in spite of any amount of Old’n qualities she possesses. She’s at the NBC TCA Press Tour today, killing the critics with her charm and wit, and that’s no easy feat, given how disgruntled that bunch can be, so my admiration for her has grown again. I will probably skip her new show, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers, a “Punk’d for Seniors”, but I wish her the best nonetheless.

I have had a soft spot in my heart for her ever since the Mary Tyler Moore show and since my best friend from College, who grew up in Brentwood, showed me the little local newsletter his Mother had sent him, which sported a photo of their neighbor Betty White proclaiming “It’s Just Lovely in Brentwood.”

That’s LA for you, by the way. If you’re lucky, your neighbor will be a celebrity who thinks your neighborhood is “just lovely”, and then she’ll live to be 90 years old and will still have a job.

Or that will be you. Either way.

And either way, since I’ve just learned how old and still successful Tony Bennett and Betty White are, it means I am in great company when my son calls me an Old’n.

Tony Bennett: Duets II premieres January 27th on PBS. Betty’s White’s Off Their Rockers Special Preview January 16th on NBC.

Healthy Living in 2012: National Weigh-In Day With Special K

I had a wonderful holiday and I hope you did, too. I spent time with family, I was a tourist in my own town, and I ate lots of Holiday Food.

Way too much.

So when The Motherhood asked me to take part in Special K’s National Weigh-In Day, I said yes with no hesitation. I knew I needed a reality check about the way I’ve been eating and how much exercise I’ve been getting, and this was a great chance to do that.

National Weigh-in Day with Special K January 2nd, 2012By the way, if you think I’m going to tell you – or anyone else in the world – how much I weigh today, you’re completely out of your mind. That number is for me – and for me alone – to know. And that’s the beauty of the Special K Weigh-In Day: No Numbers.

They had a special scale set up at the Grove in LA and when you stepped up on it, instead of a number, it displayed an inspirational word. Mine was Radiance.

Love that!

Obviously a lot of people make weight loss one of their New Year’s Resolutions, but it turns out women tend to focus very negatively on the number of pounds they need to lose. I certainly know this first hand, having been a woman all 49 of my years.

Women tend to make weight loss about deprivation – and again, I do have some personal experience here as well – ahem. But anyone can probably tell you that depriving yourself is not a happy time, and it tends to lead to failure, especially in dieting.

However, if you turn it around, if you actually work toward a positive goal, like for instance, being Fit at Fifty (my personal goal for 2012), you have a much better chance of succeeding.

Special K is trying to change the weight loss conversation for women, hence their tagline: What Will You Gain When You Lose?

It’s a great way to think about the whole process, especially at this time of year, when everyone’s inclination is to make a fresh start.

I want to Gain agility, flexibility, stamina and endurance. (Remember, I have 2 Tween boys.) I also want to Gain the feeling that comes from being fit: the adrenaline rush after a workout, the joy of playing with my kids, the confidence that comes when I know I look good.

And I certainly want to Gain Radiance.

Special K’s website has meal planning tools and more inspiration for us all to use as we make our New Year’s Resolutions into reality, so check it out.

What would you like to Gain this year?

Happy New Year 2012!

Perhaps the Mayans will turn out to be right, and this will be the year the world ends. In case they were wrong, I’ve made my annual New Year’s Resolutions so I can make the most out of 2012.

I plan to turn 50 later this year in a fit bod. Which means I’ll be working out on a regular basis. Just watch me.

Mostly I want to be able to do a Plank for more than 15 seconds without my arms falling off. If you’ve never done a Plank, here’s a video of someone doing one:

Once I master The Plank for more than 1 minute, I will move on to The Side Plank. Stay tuned.

The next thing on my list is to play more with my kids. Note that this goal may dovetail nicely with my fitness goal. Good thinking, huh?

The other important thing for me this year is to work more efficiently, being more focused with my time when I am at the computer, which of course will help not only earn more money to pay for those bills the Tweens keep throwing at me, but will also, conveniently, help facilitate the first 2 goals.

That’s my plan for the year, in terms of goals, anyway. What do you have planned?

My Info Guardian and Internet Privacy

As a mom of Tweens, I am concerned about internet privacy, especially as it concerns my children and family’s safety. Most of the time I don’t actively worry about it, but I have spent enough time thinking about it that I do have a few rules I insist my kids follow when they’re online (no chatting, no giving out their location to strangers, no filling out web forms without me present, among others).

My Info Guardian Internet Privacy

But I hadn’t really considered just how much of our personal information is out there in the world until I sat down for lunch with Jessica Gottlieb and the team from MyInfoGuardian.com.

I had the pants scared off me a little bit, I must say.

Turns out it would be ridiculously easy for a phisher to get access to your bank account just from knowing a few details about you, including a too-simple password on the account.

Let this serve as a call to action that, if nothing else, you ought to change ALL your passwords every 90 days. And don’t use your birthdate! Make it at least difficult for anyone else to steal your stuff.

So much of our lives are lived publicly these days, with Facebook and Twitter, and I am a blogger after all, so at some level I have decided to be pretty public with my life. But there’s a limit. And I do not want to go past that limit.

So I am left with knowing there is a lot of information out there about me and I am very uncomfortable about it. I am not a freak about privacy by any stretch, but there are things I don’t want other people knowing. Like how to get into my bank account and make a big withdrawal.

Enter MyInfoGuardian. The service shows you where on the internet your info is being stored and sold, and it can help you get everything hidden and kept, well, private.

At the aforementioned lunch, the team at MyInfoGuardian gave me a lifetime membership in their service, which shows how many websites are holding onto your personal information (think address, social security number, kids’ names) – and how many of them are selling that information  without your knowledge or permission.

Then they make it all better by making them stop.

I’m just getting started using the service so I’ll have more reports as I get into it and as there are more details to share, but in meantime, please change your passwords!

Serve App Helps Make Splitting The Bill Easier

This post is sponsored by Serve from American Express. Sign up for Serve and receive $10 credit towards your first use. Comment below within the next 7 days for your chance to win an extra $100 credit to your account!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been so busy lately I have barely had any time to spend with my friends – I’m sure many of you can relate, especially at this time of year. But then an opportunity came up where I would be able to go out with friends to test out this new App called Serve, and of course I jumped at it!
Steak for lunch! at Providence in Los Angeles via Serve App from American Express
Dessert treats at Providence restaurant in Los Angeles Serve American ExpressI had lunch with Yvonne, one of my co-Founder buddies in MomsLA, and we actually took a break from talking about work for a few minutes and had a nice conversation about non-blogging topics. (Shocking, I know.) I also got to have dinner with a former neighbor who I haven’t really sat down with for probably years. It was great to catch up and hear about her new job and what’s been happening with her kids.
And both meals were on me. Or rather, both meals were courtesy of Serve, in order to test it out; I just did the work of spreading the money around.
I started by signing up for my Serve account online, which was super easy, and they even gave me a $10 credit just for doing it.  (Everyone gets the credit for signing up.) Then I added the Serve App to my iPhone. It’s got a great look and it’s very simple to use.
I love the button called “Split the Bill”: I pulled it up when we were ready to pay and we could split it up evenly, including the right amount of tip, and not have to figure it out using fingers and toes.
Split the Bill on iPhone 3 Serve App from American Express
Once the bill was split, my 2nd favorite button came into play: “Send Money.” I almost never carry cash around, and whenever I’m splitting up the bill with friends I inevitably end up owing them money – promising the next time I have exact change I’ll give it to them.
Send Money via Serve App
Of course, once I’ve been to the ATM I pay my friends back right away, but it would be so much easier if I could just send them money from an App like Serve instead of waiting to have exact change. I tried it out just to see how it all works and it’s very easy to do. Enter the person’s email address and the amount you want to send and it’s done: you have sent them money.
There are other features, like sub accounts, which I think will matter more to me when my kids are off at college and will need their own spending money – but on an allowance. I like that I would be able to track their spending and control how much I give them, without the worry of putting a check in the mail.
OOO – and I’m waiting to try out the Pizza Party feature someday soon!
And if you don’t have a smartphone to run the App? No problem, you can take care of all the transactions on Serve’s website.
Plus – check out the contest below: you could win $100 credit from Serve!
Sesame Street’s Once Upon a Monster for Xbox 360 Kinect
Sesame Street’s Once Upon a Monster for Xbox 360 Kinect is a delightful kids’ video game that makes great use of the Kinect capabilities. Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar and Grover all make appearances, offering a familiar set of characters to guide your child through the game, which also introduces a whole new cast of Monsters.
Sesame Street Once Upon a Monster video game for Xbox 360 KinectOnce Upon a Monster is fairly easy to play, although there’s always a learning curve with the Kinect. You need to practice moving in ways that it can read, and it needs to “learn” to read your body, too. I had a few problems leaning the right way and moving my body in time to miss the obstacles in the game. But it’s very fun, and I did manage to get the hang of it.
Of course my kids are better at it than I am, and yours may be as well. Which is just as well, since the game is really meant for kids.
I was concerned that my 8-year-old, who is really into his older brother’s video games, would think Once Upon a Monster was too young for him. And at first he told me he was too old for it. But as soon as I started playing, he wanted to join in! Once he did, he ended up having a really good time. My 12-year-old didn’t want to play, but he watched and made sure to tell me what I was doing wrong.
(Tweens are so helpful that way.)
But I didn’t mind; I got to spend time with my kids and the game made us laugh.
Sesame Street’s Once Upon a Monster is rated E for Everyone and is available only for the Xbox 360 Kinect.
{Full Disclosure: I was given a copy of the game for review.}
Kingston urDrive 8GB DataTraveler: Tech For The Holidays
Looking for a stocking stuffer or Chanukah gift this year with a guarantee it’ll be put to good use? I suggest the Kingston urDrive 8GB DataTraveler USB Flash Drive. Or a few dozen of them.
Here’s why this little device is so awesome: First of all, it’s 8GB. I think that’s as big as my first iPhone. Huge amount of storage on a tiny little device. How do they do that? (That’s for another blogger to answer – I do not have a clue. Sorry.)
Kingston urDrive 8GB DataTraveler size comparison to an iPhoneNext, the urDrive software, which is preloaded onto this Flash drive, has a built-in web browser, games, a music player, photo viewer and Fooz Kid-safe apps.
When you launch the software, up pops your own little desktop, like you’ve taken your computer with you and set up shop inside someone else’s.
I’m thinking this is perfect for kids who’re working on shared computers at school or in the library. When they use the urDrive, not only is their data going to be stored – and lots of it, at that – but they’ll be surfing the web through a protected portal, as it were.
The Kingston urDrive 8GB DataTraveler retails for about $9 and here’s a list of websites where you can buy it.
